Political Action and Issues

The 2008 election year is in full swing!

On November 18, the NTDO general membership met to hear presentations from a number of Democratic primary candidates. Members-in-good-standing voted on which candidates to endorse in each contested race. A 60% majority vote is required for NTDO endorsements.

On February 5, these NTDO-endorsed candidates will contend for ballot slots in the November general election, which includes the Presidential election.

Now, NTDO member-volunteers are organizing to help our Democratic candidates win their races in the February 5, 2008 Democratic Primary Election.

Our Political Action Coordinator, Chris Dunn, leads eight Area Chairs, each coordinating several hundred Precinct Representatives. It's a big job! Chris and his Area Chairs will welcome any amount of time you can give as a grassroots volunteer.

You can help in various ways—from stuffing envelopes to distributing literature to introducing a candidate to your neighbors by hosting a "coffee." Each of these activities is significant Democratic political action. Your volunteer time is valuable to the NTDO.

Of course, member donations can help pay for such crucial tools as campaign materials and extra phone lines. Your dollars are as valuable as your time, and donations large or small are always appreciated.

Contact NTDO now to get involved in your favorite volunteer activities, and find out how to join the NTDO as a Contributing or Sustaining member.

Your help will make a real difference in the crucial 2008 national, state, and local elections this November.

A Message from NT Committeeman Bill Crowley

Our membership has made its 2008 endorsements. Now comes the job NTDO was created to do…

November 18, 2007 did seem like a ridiculously early date to endorse candidates for 2008. Didn't we just finish the 2006 campaign? But with Illinois' Primary Election date pushed ahead to early February, it had to be done. And thankfully, despite the early date, NTDO members filled Room 101 of the Winnetka Community House to decide which Democratic candidates the NTDO should support.

It was, as it always is, a lively afternoon with candidates or their representatives making presentations followed by members speaking from the floor, presenting their reasons for supporting their preferred candidates. When the afternoon ended, we had a slate of Democratic candidates chosen by 60% or more of the members attending.

But the real test of our commitment lies ahead. Endorsement was just the first step, not the end nor the goal. Our organization's endorsements will be used in campaign literature to help candidates immediately. And we must help these candidates in every way we're able, from now until Election Day.

Hosting meet-and-greets, contributing funds, stuffing envelopes, making phone calls, ringing doorbells—whatever activities you choose. We must never forget: getting Democratic candidates elected is the basic reason the NTDO exists.

Thanks for all you do—and have a great Holiday season.
