GRACE PERIOD REGISTRATION means if an eligible Illinois resident didn't register to vote by the "30 days before" deadline, he or she has a second chance.  At a few locations, election authorities let people show up, register and vote all in the same trip. The grace period is until November 3.

When You Must RE-Register & How to Do It

  • If you move within suburban Cook County, you can simply fill out the back of your old voter registration card and mail it in for a new registration card. (But if you no longer have your old registration card, you must re-register, probably in person).

  • If you move from Chicago or from outside Cook County, you must re-register, probably in person.

  • Anyone who has moved since the last election also has to re-register for the next election, probably in person.

  • NEW PROCEDURE: If You've Changed Your Name: You may fill out a form at your polling place and vote under your new name on election day.

  • To vote, usually you must be registered at least 30 days before the election, including primaries, but this election a grace period has been added.

   Postcard Registration

NTDO can supply the postcard registration form to anyone who needs to register. Or you can download the computer-generated form at www.voterinfonet.com.

Please Note: Anyone who uses the new postcard registration option must vote in person the first time he or she votes under the new registration; therefore, you cannot vote by absentee ballot in the next election if you register now by postcard.

To vote, usually you must be registered at least 30 days before the election, including primaries. (See the information above about "grace period registration.")

  Early Voting

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EARLY VOTING:

Registered Illinois voters are allowed to vote early
from Monday October 22 - Saturday November 3, 2012
.
These are the early voting locat
ions convenient to New Trier Township voters:
Wilmette Community Rec Center, 3000 Glenview Rd. (New location)  -- Northbrook Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane -- Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave. -- Glenview Village Hall, 1225 Waukegan Rd. -- Skokie Courthouse, 5600 W. Old Orchard Rd. -- County Clerk's Main Office, 69 W. Washington St. (Pedway)

Early voting on weekends is available at the County Clerk's office in the Skokie Courthouse, 5600 W. Old Orchard Rd, rm 149, Sat 9-5 and Sun 9-Noon.

When you vote early, remember to bring a government-issued photo ID such as a passport, driver's license, or military ID. All Early Voting is conducted on touch screens.

Illinois law also now allows for absentee voting
without requiring a reason.

Applying for an absentee ballot is easy and convenient. To obtain an absentee application, registered suburban Cook County voters can:

  • Download and print the application, or...
  • Call the Clerk's office at (312) 603-0946 to request that we
    mail you an application, or...
  • Pick one up at any of the Clerk's six office locations.

The last day to apply for a mail-in absentee ballot is five days before the election. Applications must be submitted by mail, certified courier or in person. Applications cannot be accepted by email or fax.

A Voter Bonus!: When you vote early, it's a matter of public record so once you do it, you'll stop receiving many campaign phone calls.

We recommend that all election judges and NTD Election Day volunteers use early voting, likewise, anyone who will be out of town on an election day. For complete info about early voting, visit the County Clerk's website, voterinfonet.com.
